premium movies.com
Client
ABC (through Schematic)Challenge
ABC wanted to promote its premium version of movies.com, available only to subscribers of some cable companies. The key was to differentiate the premium experience of this exclusive site, so that it would be perceived as a value added service. Designing the right experience was key for the success of this project.
Solution
Because this project was assigned close to my departure for graudate school, I was not able to see the final design and development. However, below I will demonstrate the process and key deliverables presented while I was with the company. Please note that this is not the design for movies.com, but rather the premium version whose link I am not able to provide.
Process
This was an especially exciting endeavor due to the collaborative effort of designers, animators and creative directors. We took a very "blue sky" approach to the exploration of interaction models and spacial navigation. My role was to ensure the inclusion of all client-requirements and the overall usability of the site. The two videos on this page demonstrate the transition between four modes of the video player
The first video demo illustrates two concepts. One is the idea of a reel that is threaded through the video player, where one side represents the viewed videos, while the other represents the playlist. The grid above the player shows the user the vastness of the available video colleciton and allows filtering to a specific genre or category.

The second video demo illustrates clusters (loosely structured group of items) as a way of navigating through related videos. The shapes in the corners represent individual movie titles grouped by a particular theme.
