ABC Family (through Schematic)

Challenge

Every December, the abcfamily.com web page is replaced with a Christmas-themed site that is a portal to both holiday and regular content. The teen and pre-teen audience should be provided with special holiday features and programming promotions. The site should be maintain a strong connection with the television programming, encourage overall TV viewship, and feature their annual holiday contest. The Christmas site design would be the first step into a wholly new ABC Family web site.

Solution

A colorful interactive site that seamlessly merged Christmas and ABC Family original programming. One of the final site concepts, as created by the Graphic Designers on the team is presented here:

Process

As the lead User Experience Designer for the site architecture, I wanted to immerse myself in the abc family environment. I spent time watching the programming and understanding the brand. I created personas that I believed to portray the brand and presented them to the client. Having found agreement, we moved on to brainstorm and then isolate the key features of the site. This transitioned into the Architecture phase that consisted of determining the structure, creating wireframes and finally working with the designers to create the final look & feel. The site was successfully launched in December 2006. A few of the key deliverables are presented here:
